Narrative
As an undergrad in college, I created two extensive hypertext stories, both collaborative projects aimed at constructing a nonlinear 'space' where a story exists, with multiple paths and depths, where the reader would be able to explore an environment rather than taking a single path through the narrative space.
In Fractured Fairy Tale, I set out to create a totally collaborative story - I wrote the first fragment of it, which hinted at elements the whole story might contain, and sent that fragment to a number of people (some I knew, some I found over the internet). People then sent me their own fragments of varying length. From all of these, I created a story space that you navigate with six directions (rather than the usual two, 'forward' and 'back', of a linear narrative). Each piece of the story links to six others, using icons. You can follow a particular set of related icons (for example, keep following the green icon, or the one that's a an Inuktitut character, or the one that's a comic book symbol) to read fragments by the same author, or you can choose a different symbol to go to a section that's thematically or lyrically related. In this way, navigating through the story is similar to navigating through a physical space, where roads branch off from the one you're on, and eventually you might hit a familiar road again.
A Search of Three Questions is another collaborative story (this one created with one other person). In it, we wrote a simple, linear story that can be read normally; however, every word or phrase in the story is a hypertext link. The links have differing depths - some bring you to whole other stories, some to images or sounds, and some to simple definitions of a word. This way, the story is easy to read, but there is a kind of space behind the words.
Each project will open in its own window.
Theatre
My first foray into the design world was through theatrical set and lighting design. In high school, college, and in several professional/community ventures, I worked as a lighting, set, and costume designer - sometimes all three for a single production. Photos of the last theatrical work I did (in 2003), with the Greenville Shakespeare Company, are available at their website, GreenvilleShakes.org. Photos of other shows are available here:
